Theresa is an occupational therapist and certified hand therapist with 13 years of experience working in several clinical settings, including acute care, short-term rehabilitation, outpatient pediatrics and behavioral health. She has focused most of her career as an outpatient OT specializing in adult neurologic and orthopedic conditions of the upper extremity. Theresa has been a board-certified hand therapist since 2015. She has a strong interest in both rehabilitation and education of future and current therapists. In the clinic, she has found that client education leads to greater individual empowerment. Theresa enjoys educating clients, family members, students and colleagues regarding upper extremity conditions and evidence-based rehabilitation interventions. She is a doctoral candidate at Drexel University with an anticipated graduation date in late 2022/early 2023. Her Doctorate of Health Science scholarship project is a retrospective case series that explores current rehabilitation practices for patients following traumatic brachial plexus injury and nerve transfer surgery. In addition to her clinical and personal academic activities, Theresa serves as co-coordinator of the Duke Hand Therapy Fellowship and works with the Duke School of Medicine Doctorate of Occupational Therapy program as a course co-instructor and student preceptor. She is active in the hand therapy and occupational therapy communities as a member of the American Society of Hand Therapy (ASHT) and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). Theresa also serves as a member of the Leadership Committee for ASHT. She was recently given the ASHT Presidential Award for contributions to the society in October 2021.
