Congratulations to Carl – our newly minted Ph.D. – who gave a great seminar [“Phylogenetics of Cystopteridaceae: Reticulation and Divergence in a Cosmopolitan Fern Family”] to the Systematics Group on the morning of August 27, and later that afternoon successfully defended his Ph.D. to his committee (Pryer, Advisor; Mitchell-Olds, Roth, Swofford, and Windham). Celebrations and much relief ensued (witness Carl in photo #2 above)! On August 31, the dissertation was submitted to the Graduate School, and in January 2013 Carl heads to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada to embark on a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship awarded by NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada). But he is still with us through the fall – yeah!
