Keynote

Who are we? Supporting cultures of authenticity at work.  //  View recording
Presented by Stephanie Robertson / Assistant Dean, Office of Diversity & Inclusion, Fuqua School of Business

Our many identities shape how we view the world around us and how we experience life. Sharing these identities with others can be the key to creating the foundations upon which strong connections can be made and people can be their authentic selves. Inclusion and equity may be the ultimate goals, but that can’t happen if individuals within a community spend time and energy covering large parts of who they are.

We will discuss how authentic conversations in the workplace should be encouraged and supported by organizations. Additionally, we will cover some of the initiatives at the Duke University Fuqua School of Business that give people opportunities to share their identities in a safe and structured manner and ultimately create a culture of authenticity. Lastly, I will share how embracing authenticity has shaped me personally and as a diversity and inclusion professional.

Stephanie Robertson
joined the Duke University Fuqua School of Business in 2019 as the inaugural head of the Office of Community Engagement and Inclusion. As the current Assistant Dean for the newly rebranded Office of Diversity and Inclusion, she works closely with students, staff and faculty to create a more inclusive and welcoming community where diversity is celebrated and every person feels a true sense of belonging. She received her BA in German Language and Literature and International Comparative Studies from Duke University and worked in Germany as a teacher after graduating in 2001. After returning to the states, she continued her education and received her JD from Georgetown University Law Center in 2006. After law school, Stephanie worked at Thacher Proffitt and Wood LLP in New York City in their structured finance department.

In 2009, she began a career in higher education and worked predominantly in admissions and graduate recruitment for business and law school before her current role. In her current role, Stephanie is dedicated to empowering individuals to be their authentic selves and active allies who support, protect and celebrate others’ identities. In addition to being a part of Fuqua’s Anti-racism Initiative, Stephanie is a dedicated mental health advocate and believes that mental health is an integral part of the diversity, equity and inclusion conversation. She is a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) instructor and leads the MHFA efforts at Fuqua. Through this, and other initiatives, her goal is to destigmatize mental health challenges and give students, staff and faculty the tools needed to effectively and safely support their peers and colleagues.

Concurrent Sessions I

Chat GPT & the Death of the Cover Letter: A Discussion with Allison Besch — Room 223
Chat GPT and similar AI technology can write a passable cover letter in about five seconds. My bold prediction is that the cover letter will go from a core tool for hiring managers to extinction in the next five years. Let’s discuss the merits of this statement, the pros and cons of A.I., and what this all means for career coaches moving forward. No previous familiarity with Chat GPT is required to participate.
Community at Duke and in Durham: A Discussion with Deanna Knighton Room 05
Expanded to include Durham this year! For Duke, from the Athletics (legendary!) to a Zoo (Lemur Center!), there so much to do and so many resources. Make the most of your experience as an employee and member of the community. There are people (e.g. PAS), places (e.g. Duke Gardens), and things (e.g. HR Discount program) to utilize and so many resources. What’s your favorite Duke or Durham offering? Whether you’ve been at Duke and lived in Durham for 10 years, 10 months, or 10 days, come prepared to share and learn something new.
Managing Stress & Wellbeing at Work Workshop with Ilana Palmer & Allison McIntyre Room 09
New to Duke? New to your role? Feeling stressed or anxious about your work life? You are not alone. Connect with others to learn about holistic approaches to self-care and resources available at Duke. Each participant will create an action plan to prioritize personal and professional wellbeing.
Careers in Consulting: Optimizing Student Success with Mary Beck White-Sutton Room 07
The number of students interested in consulting opportunities seems to continue to grow across multiple Schools at Duke. Thus, our students seem to be increasingly asking for consulting resources and prep. Are you curious about the most used and widely regarded consulting case resources? Are your students asking you for more consulting resources and case prep opportunities? Please join me in this workshop as we share resources pertaining to case interviews that have worked well for our respective populations.

For those planning to attend this session, please complete this survey by Friday, May 12. The results will help to inform our discussion.

Concurrent Sessions II

Duke P.R.I.D.E. Training: On Language & Identities with Angel Celeste Collie Room 07
Duke P.R.I.D.E. Training is the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity’s (CSGD) signature educational program aimed at increasing awareness of issues impacting those with marginalized sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions (SOGIE). This session focuses on language, terminology, and the complexity of identity in relation to other marginalized identities alongside marginalized sexual orientation, romantic orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.
Let’s Talk About Imposter Syndrome Workshop with Ilana Palmer & Marcie Pachino Room 09
“I don’t belong. Others are smarter and more qualified than me. Is my success a fluke?” Let’s talk about Impostor Syndrome! In this session, we examine the the ways we undervalue ourselves. We develop knowledge, tools, and resources for shifting perspective and moving forward in freedom. Participants have the opportunity to make connections with others and to learn strategies for overcoming Impostor Syndrome.

Self Aware Self-Care with Bridget Fletcher Room 05  //  View recording
Self-care is often something that folks feel they need more of but struggle to figure out where to fit it in and how to establish sustainable self-care routines. In this session, Bridget Fletcher, a certified Health + Wellbeing coach, will help participants create attainable and realistic self-care goals. You will build self-awareness around what your self-care behaviors and needs are. Then, using the Wheel of Health model, you will consider your current relationship to six aspects of health and wellbeing and define which areas you would like to focus on and create a goal (or goals) to implement right away. Participants can expect to leave this session with actionable goals to help them work toward caring for themselves and engaging fully in their lives.

Values First: Making Better Career Development Decisions Workshop with Katie Peterssen & Josh Cohen Room 223
Beginning the career development process by identifying and prioritizing career values sets the standard by which we can make authentic, satisfying decisions. This interactive session will focus on identifying your career values while sharing strategies for application with diverse student populations. Presenters will facilitate an activity to prioritize and apply your work values. You’ll leave with a new framework to help your students jumpstart career investigation and evaluate opportunities.

The first 25 participants will leave with their own copy of the Knowdell Career Values card sort, sponsored by the NC Career Development Association (NCCDA).
