Finding Your Entrepreneur with Katie Gailes
Economic challenges and changes in employment norms has shifted focus on entrepreneurship and small businesses as the key to our economic recovery and health. But are entrepreneurs born or made? Must you start a business to be considered entrepreneurial? What is the entrepreneurial mindset? This session explores the nature of entrepreneurship and provides information on how to find or develop your inner entrepreneur.
Pursue Your Passion: Tools for the Journey with Prinny Anderson
As we move through our career journey, with changing directions, ups and downs, and both planned and unplanned stops along the way, what we’re passionate about always matters deeply. Our passion or passions motivate us, help us find our way even when we’re temporarily lost or stranded, and they sustain us through exciting and challenging stretches. We will look at a number of tools and practices to clarify and fuel our passions, some of them conventional and some perhaps less widely used.
Maintaining Your Motivation with Dr. Russ Sharples
How do you stay motivated to go into the office every day? Be it 2, 5, 10 or 20 years into your career, this question rings true for any professional. Dr. Russ Sharples, Vice President of Student Development and Dean of Students at Pfeiffer University, will be here to share his experiences, and how he has kept his passion for student success in higher education after 35 years.
Intercultural Mindedness: Shifting from ‘My’ Duke to ‘Our’ Duke with Seun Bello Olamosu
Gaining a new perspective on Duke in terms of diversity and what it means for Duke Culture. How do we unify local and global norms/values in a local academic landscape with a global population? This session will emphasize the need to heighten one’s awareness of “difference” and provide opportunities to update toolboxes that can help grow in accord with a changing campus.
Assessment on Purpose with Stephanie Helms Pickett & Cole Taylor
Conducting an assessment with purpose seems challenging, time intensive. We sometimes hear people say they don’t have time for assessment. Others struggle to identify an “assessment project”. Both problems are very real when assessment is approached haphazardly or when it’s seen as an extra task. In this session purposeful assessment through the reduction of workloads, and innovation will be explored.
Duke and Durham—Channeling the Entrepreneurial Passion to Transform Our City, Region, and World with Adam Klein
Durham is quickly becoming a regional and national hub for entrepreneurial companies—some 80 startups already call downtown Durham home, with many more on the way. Much of this growth has occurred due to young college graduates starting successful companies. This talk will provide background as to what initiatives are driving this expansion in Durham, discuss the kinds of companies growing here, and the employment and internship opportunities available to Duke students and alumni.
