Lab members
The lab members have included graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral associates, medical residents and fellows, medical students, visiting scholars, and others. We also work with physicians representing different medical specialties including radiology, oncology, orthopedic surgery, and pediatrics.
Maciej Mazurowski, Ph.D (Principal Investigator)
Dr. Mazurowski is the principal investigator. He is an Associate Professor of Radiology, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at Duke University.
Longfei Zhou, Ph.D.
Longfei is a Postdoctoral Associate in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab. He is currently working on analysis of brain images in relation to Alzheimer’s disease.
Jichen “Andy” Yang
Andy is a PhD student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. Andy received his bachelors degree with a double major in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science at Duke. He is working on a variety of projects where he applies computer algorithms to medical images.
Hanxue Gu
Hanxue is a PhD student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. She completed her bachelor’s degree at Zhejiang University and was a visiting researcher at the University of Oxford and Harvard University prior to arriving to Duke.
Jikai Zhang
Jikai is a PhD student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Prior to joining Dr. Mazurowski’s team, he completed his master’s degree in Biostatistics at Duke University.
Nick Konz
Nick is a PhD student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (starting Jan 2021). He has completed a bachelor’s degree at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Yixin Zhang
Yixin is a PhD student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has completed a bachelor’s degree at Wake Forest University.
Haoyu Dong
Haoyu is a PhD student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (starting August 2022). Previously he was a research associate in our lab and an MS student in Computer Science, also doing research in our lab.

Keyu Li
Keyu is a PhD student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (starting Jan 2021). Prior to joining Dr. Mazurowski’s lab, she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Technology at the Central University of Finance and Economics and was a research intern at Harvard University.
Vivek Sahukar
Vivek is an Associate in Research in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab. Vivek is currently working on analysis of brain images in relation to spontaneous intracranial hypotension.
Shixing Cao
Shixing is a visiting scholar in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab. She has obtained a masters degree in Machine Learning/Big Data at Duke and a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Automation at Shanghai University.

Zhe Zhu, Ph.D.
Dr. Zhu is a Senior Research Associate in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab. His expertise is computer graphics, computer vision, and deep learning. Before joining Dr. Mazurowski’s lab Dr. Zhu was a Ph.D. student at Tsinghua University in China.
Jun Zhang, Ph.D.
Dr. Zhang was a Postdoctoral Associate in Dr. Mazurowski’s laboratory. His work was predominantly on deep learning algorithms applied in analysis of magnetic resonance images. Before joining Dr. Mazurowski’s lab Dr. Zhu was a postdoctoral associate at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
Parisa Shamsesfandabadi, M.D.
Dr. Shamsesfandabadi is a medical school graduate who is working on our brain tumor projects.
Hope Cain
Hope is a medical student spending her research year in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab. Her focus is on various aspects of breast cancer imaging.
Mateusz Buda
Mateusz is a visiting student from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He is finishing his master’s thesis in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab. He focuses on deep learning.
Ashirbani Saha, Ph.D.
Dr. Saha was a Postdoctoral Associate in Dr. Mazurowski’s laboratory. Her expertise is in computer vision and she works on a variety of research projects with focus on breast cancer prognostication and radiogenomics.
Jesse Hu
Jesse is a visiting scholar in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab and a former Duke undergraduate student. He focuses on applications of deep learning to breast cancer.
Jiazhou Gao
Jiazhou was a visiting undergraduate student from Tsinghua University in 2017. His work forcused on applications of deep learning to image segmentation.
Kal Clark, M.D.
Dr. Clark is a board certified Duke radiologist. He worked with us on different brain tumor projects.
Ehab AlBadawy
Ehab was a visiting scholar working with us on applications of deep learning to brain and breast imaging. Following his tenure in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab, Ehab joined SUNY, Albany as a Ph.D. student in computer science.
Michael Harowicz
Michael was a medical student spending his research year in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab. His focus was on magnetic resonance imaging of breast cancer. Following medical school, Michael joined Johns Hopkins University for radiology residency.
David Paredes
David was a visiting scholar that spent 6 months in the lab. His research focused is on deep learning.
Weiyao Wang
Weiyao was a a Duke undergraduate student working on various computational aspects of medical imaging.
David Jimenez
David was a a Duke undergraduate student on our low grade glioma project.
Nicholas Czarnek, M.S.
Nicholas Czarnek is a graduate student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Duke. His focus is on development and application of computer vision algorithms for analysis of brain tumor images. Nick was working under a joint supervision of Dr. Maciej Mazurowski and Dr. Leslie Collins from the ECE Department. Following completion of his Ph.D. Nicholas Czarnek joined the Boston Consulting Group.
Mengyu Wang, Ph.D.
Dr. Wang was a postdoctoral associate. He graduated with a Ph.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. His work in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab was focused on development of image analysis methods for computer-aided education in digital breast tomosynthesis. Following his time in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab, Dr. Wang took a postdoctoral position at Harvard Medicine.
Guojun Ma, Ph.D.
Dr. Ma is a visiting scholar from China. He worked with us on applications of computer vision and machine learning to medical imaging.
Dushyant Sahoo
Dushyant Sahoo was a visiting undergraduate student from the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi. Dushyant work focused on computer vision algorithms applied to analysis of breast cancer imaging.
Hanqui Zhu, B.Eng.
Hanqui Zhu was a visiting graduate student from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Her research focus in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab was on development of machine learning methods in radiogenomics.
Xiaozhi Yu
Xiaozhi Yu wa a visiting undergraduate student from Tsinghua University in China. His research focus wa on image processing in analysis of breast cancer imaging.
Hsienyu Meng
Hsienyu Meng was a visiting undergraduate student from Tsinghua University in China. Her research focus in Dr. Mazurowski’s lab wa on machine learning in radiogenomics.
Xiaobo Lai, Ph.D.
Dr. Lai was a visiting scholar from China. He worked with us on modeling for medical imaging and applications of computer vision and machine learning to Radiology. Dr. Lai is co-advised by Dr. Joseph Lo and Dr. Maciej Mazurowski.
Lars Grimm, M.D.
Dr. Grimm was a radiology resident at Duke. He worked with us on the adaptive radiology education and radiogenomics.
Michael Cho, M.D.
Dr. Cho was a radiology resident at Duke. He worked with us on the adaptive radiology education.
Rosamarie Maiorella, B.S.
Rosamarie Maiorella is a medical student who worked in our lab during her research year on brain tumor imaging.
Yunfan Liu
Yunfan Liu was a visiting undergraduate student from Tsinghua University. He worked with us on applications of computer vision and machine learning to analysis of brain tumor images.
Jing Zhang, Ph.D.
Dr. Jing Zhang was a Postdoctoral Associate working in our lab. He worked on development of computer vision methods for analysis of medical images. The applications ranged from cancer imaging (breast cancer, glioblasoma) to adaptive radiology education in mammography.

Angel Long, a Duke medical student was working with us on a brain tumor imaging project.
Meng Wang
Meng Wang was a visiting undergraduate student from Tsinghua University in China. The focus of his work was on applications of computer vision methods to the adaptive radiology education project. Meng worked in the lab for about 1 month from January 2014 to February 2014.
Zack Silber
Zack Silber was a biomedical engineering undergraduate student at Duke. He worked mainly on the adaptive radiology education project.
Hasan Hobbs, M.D.
Dr. Hobbs was a neuro-radiology fellow at Duke. He worked with us part time to help with clinical issues related to the GBM project.
