Ultimate Oculus Rift #Augrealities Literary Challenge
**UPDATE: RESULTS OF THE CHALLENGE CAN NOW BE FOUND BELOW
This is the culmination of all we’ve studied merged into a collaborative Design-Sprint Challenge. We began the course with Neuromancer and a trip to Duke’s Immersive Virtual Environment, we moved to graphic novels and electronic literature, and we’ve explored the Makey Makey and 3D printing as critical making + critical thinking (literary) tools. Today you’ll get into teams of two to design a prototype – using the Oculus Rift as your medium – based on your Challenge Question.
Challenge Questions (to be randomly drawn):
- How would William Gibson write a novel using the Oculus Rift?
- How would McKenzie Wark (re)write Gamer Theory using the Oculus Rift?
- How would Ba & Moon use Oculus Rift to design a VR chapter for Daytripper?
Challenge Specs:
- You’ll have a total of 45 minutes to create your prototype and your 6-slide design pitch
- You’ll be able to tweet experts from our Challenge Twitter Panel if you need support or inspiration (@markcmarino @Leonardo_UPRM @mckenziewark)
- BONUS: Duke’s David Zielinski (VR pro who has used the Oculus Rift) might be stopping in to class to offer an in-person expert consult for each team.
Impossibly short 6-slide pitch will follow this 6-slide prescription
- What is your Challenge Question?
- What is your answer? (and why… justify your answer based on what we’ve read and what we’ve explored)
- What is your design prototype? Include a name, an image, and a short description
- How does the prototype work? How does the reader ‘read’ the piece? What does it do? How does it differ from other media? What does it do that is specific only to the Oculus Rift?
- Who might use this (audience) and why (sell it to me)?
- Reflection: How might the Oculus Rift ‘revolutionize’ reading and writing? What are the ethical/political/social implications of your design?
We will then present our ideas on Friday (no changes to be made to the slides after the Challenge time clock stops today) AND we’ve been invited to publish our results on the new Buzzademia journal site.
Good luck!
