PRESIDENT

Katie Raya (she/her) is from San Diego, CA and graduated from UC Berkeley in 2019 with a degree in Public Health. In undergrad, she was an EMT and cardio surgery intern until she decided she wanted to pursue a career in law! In between college and law school, she worked as a healthcare consultant in San Francisco for three years. At Duke, she is involved in the Healthcare Planning Project, Health Law Society, and California Club. She is also in the MA program in Bioethics and Science Policy. LALSA has been her favorite experience in law school, and the best community and support system.

VICE PRESIDENT OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

Gabriela (Gaby) Perez (she/her) is a 2L from Miami, FL! Before law school, she went to the University of Florida (go Gators!) where she majored in Political Science and International Studies. During her time in Gainesville, she was a language assistant where she taught English to international students. After graduating, she briefly worked in a boutique law firm in Miami. In law school, she is involved in the Florida Club as Co-President and the Business Law Society as VP of ESQ!

VICE PRESIDENT OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS

Alberto (Kike) Poleo (he/him) is a 2L from Caracas, Venezuela but was raised in Miami, FL. He graduated from UCLA in 2019 with a degree in Economics. In undergrad, he was a member of the UCLA Men’s Soccer Team! In between college and law school, he worked as a legal assistant in New York for three years. At Duke, he is also a vice president of the Sports and Entertainment Law Society and Duke Law Florida Club. LALSA has been his greatest source of friendships and mentoring!

VICE PRESIDENT OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

David Marantes (he/him) is a 2L from San Antonio, Texas and graduated in 2022 from Cornell University with a degree in Government and History. He was an active member of the Big Red Marching Band and interned in communications and public history before deciding to attend law school. At Duke, David has been involved with the Texas Club and LALSA. He has enjoyed meeting and getting to know LALSA’s members and looks forward to another great year!

Ashley Nelson (she/her) is a 2L from Orange County, CA. She graduated from UC Berkeley majoring in sustainable environmental design and minored in city and regional planning. During college, she worked for the cal athletics marketing department. After college, she worked with the mayor of her hometown to work on sustainable initiatives in their city! She is also the President of the Duke Law CA Club!

VICE PRESIDENT OF ACADEMIA AND PUBLIC INTEREST

Gabriela Nagle Alverio (she/her) is a 2L from Ellicott City, MD and graduated from Stanford University in 2019 with an M.A. in Environmental Communications and a B.A. in International Relations. She started her Ph.D. in Environmental Policy at Duke in 2020 and her dissertation research focuses on climate mobility. Her findings regarding the lack of protection afforded to those impacted by climate change inspired her to go to law school. She is currently the Executive Director of the Duke Immigrant and Refugee Project and is involved in the Human Rights Law Society. However, she is especially proud and grateful for her experience in LALSA and looks forward to helping shape the community for future law students!

Daniela Pereira Salas (she/her) is a 2L from San José, Costa Rica. She majored in International Relations with a double minor in Business and Economics. After college, she worked as a litigation paralegal for an employment law firm outside of D.C. At Duke, she is also the Academic Chair of First Class and the Communication Manager of the Global Law Student Association!

2L REPRESENTATIVE

Natalie Leon (she/her) is a 2L from Harrington Park, New Jersey. She graduated from Tulane University in 2021 with a degree in Public Health and Cellular and Molecular Biology. In undergrad, she was the president of her sorority and was on the pre-med track until she realized law school was right for her. After undergrad, she worked as a paralegal in a boutique law firm in New Orleans where she got to be the “exhibit girl” for a week-long federal jury trial. At Duke, she’s involved with the Duke Bar Association, Health Care Planning Project, and Intellectual Property Law Society. She is also a part of the JD/MA program in Bioethics and Science Policy. She’s grateful for all the amazing friends she’s met through LALSA so far and can’t wait to meet future members!

Atzin Villarreal Sosa (he/him) is a 3L from Chicago, IL. He majored in Political Economy at Williams College where he was a member of the Williams Men’s Varsity Crew Team. Prior to law school, he spent two years working in Buffalo, NY at M&T Bank in their Risk Management Department. At Duke, he is involved with the Duke Immigrant and Refugee Project where he worked on Asylum and DACA applications. He also served as LALSAs VP of Professional Development last year. He looks forward to continuing the great work LALSA has done the last two years and hopes to provide support and mentorship to the incoming board!
