Role Description

We are seeking to hire new teams member who are passionate about finding, researching, and supporting companies that are transforming the Financial Services industry. Fin VC has aglobal remit and is expanding its SF team. The role will report into Investment Partner, Peter Ackerson.

Sourcing
• Conducting market analysis and opportunity identification via academic research, customer interviews, conferences, incubator and University demo days, and peers (Angels/VCs).
• Proactively developing relationships with identified early stage (Seed, Series A, and B) companies that align to our investment theses and scope
• Help manage the investment pipeline process
• Creating content, events, and more to build the firm’s brand in the global market

Diligence and Investment Execution
• Support the team’s initial screening and subsequent deep due diligence of potential investments
• Support development of diligence materials and Investment Memo/Scorecard to assess market sizing, talent assessment, product-market fit, key metrics/financials, capital structure, valuation modeling and exit scenarios, risks, etc.
• Liaise with team members to support diligence checks (product, tech, and finance) and finalize investment execution (legal and finance)

Portfolio Company Operating Support
• Support portfolio companies around product strategy, talent sourcing, business development, regional market and global expansion and support for future financing
• Help gather and manage portfolio performance, metrics, and financials on a Quarterly basis
• Support capital raising for the firm and portfolio company follow-on round growth financings

Desired Skills and Experience
• Excitement to join an emerging manager and help build a specialist VC focused on FinTech globally
• Deep network and experiencing in working across the US market
• Passion for the intersection of Financial Services and technology, along with RETech, InsureTech, and adjacent spaces
• 2-4 years (Associate), 3-5 years (Sr. Associate) of previous work experience, ideally with a background in venture capital, private equity, or investment banking with exposure to Financial Services / FinTech
• B.A. or B.S. in related fields, technical experience a strong plus. MBA preferred for Sr. Associate level.
• Strong grasp of technology trends and business models, ideally in FinTech
• Small working team experience, strong interpersonal skills, critical thinking, and an exceptional work ethic and discipline
• Preference and consideration given to foreign language capabilities, particularly in Spanish, Mandarin,
and Arabic
• SF or NYC based

About the competition

Workers and students of the future face challenging trends that may jeopardize their financial health. Rapid technology changes are requiring workers to train and reskill for career advancement, yet costs of education and training programs are rising steadily. The gig economy is growing rapidly, but offers inconsistent income and is an insufficient replacement for traditional jobs.

There is a need for fintech products, services, and partnerships that help people prepare for the economies of the future by addressing the barriers to affordable training, education, and opportunity.

On October 24, the Financial Solutions Lab launched its sixth challenge, to advance the financial health of workers and students who are developing in-demand skills that prepare them for the future of work. The challenge will cultivate, support and scale fintech solutions that benefit people who face persistent financial health challenges.

Who should appy? 

This Challenge aims to identify and develop fintech solutions and partnerships that are advancing the financial health of workers and students who are developing in-demand skills to prepare them for the future of work.

We are looking for innovative start-ups and nonprofits who are:

  • Providing fintech solutions to the currently employed, either full-time or as a participant in the gig economy.
  • Addressing the challenges of building the workforce of the future, including helping workers access training or seek higher education to either enter, rejoin, or advance their careers.

The Role

We are seeking a versatile, driven, and detail-oriented Summer Associate to join our small, high-performing team. There are always new and exciting challenges generated by the daily roller coaster ride of Silicon Valley startups and their investors, and we need someone who can adapt to this ebb and flow and not be limited by the job description. Key elements of the role include:

  • Sourcing

    • Building a list of startups and founders that fit the Maven Ventures investment thesis. Review our Angellist applications and qualify the best applicants.

    • Network with other VC summer associates, interns, recent grads, and startup founders. Be the Maven representative at events and conferences for your university, helping the team connect with entrepreneurs and future venture leaders in your network and in the Bay Area over the summer.

    • Support investment execution by drafting investment memos, participating in founder pitch meetings, and doing diligence and research. Strengthen the Maven investment theses in focus areas through market research and analysis.

  • Portfolio

    • Establish the onboarding process for new investments. Produce a checklist covering the documents and questions to be covered in the onboarding process for new portfolio companies. Formalize the Maven Startup Kit with the resources and best practices the team recommends for new founders.

  • Marketing

    • Strengthen and expand the Maven Ventures Blog: ghostwrite two or more thought pieces on behalf of the partners, revise/update/strengthen partners’ thought pieces already published, and form a strategy for additional distribution and readership.

    • Coordinate speaking opportunities for firm partners’ to broaden the strength of the Maven brand at incubators, conferences, and events.

  • Events

    • Host one to two Maven-branded events for the Maven Community and portfolio companies with relevant sponsor partners (TriNet, Airtable, Carta, Salesforce Essentials) including but not limited to office hours, lunch-and-learns, happy hours, and other social and networking events

    • Support Maven’s annual Hypergrowth Retreat, the premier event for consumer startups seeking to achieve hypergrowth. This could include content curation, ticket sales, and day of problem solving.

 The Digital Innovators Research Program is a year-long initiative in which engineers from outside Goldman Sachs use Marquee APIs and datasets. Selected researchers will pursue projects of interest to institutional clients, potentially addressing needs around Data Visualization, Machine Learning, Mobile, and more.

Research Triangle, NC – RTP Capital – Internship Opportunity

Hi, I’m Ed Pettiss (Duke ’73), looking for summer interns to work with the RTP Capital angel investment network.

RTP Capital is a strong network of about 60 accredited angel investors in the Research Triangle. The group functions as a forum to facilitate collaboration among its members for potential investment opportunities and is not an investment fund. The group’s mission is to encourage active participation in early-stage capital investment in the Southeast, especially North Carolina and adjoining states.  With over $10 million invested by its members since 2012, RTP Capital was listed as the most active southeast angel network in 2017. RTP Capital will co-host the Southeast Regional Meeting of the Angel Capital Association in September 2019. We provide education to our members and guide and mentor start-up founders. We work closely with other angel networks and funds.

Job Description:

During the internship, the candidate will be responsible for conducting first-pass screenings, conducting due diligence on startups chosen by members of RTP Capital, reviewing pitches, mentoring startups, doing in depth financial analysis of company viability, and general diligence. The candidate will probably assist our members in planning and coordinating the Southeast ACA Meeting. The position is designed to be for the benefit of the intern, with real-world training similar to MBA level Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship classes, with regular assignments and feedback.

Requirements:

An ideal candidate will be comfortable interacting with both founders and investors, proficient in working with detailed financial projections, and must be willing to learn in a high-paced environment.

  • Student studying business/finance (current MBA students preferred)
  • Strong connection/interest in entrepreneurship
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

Availability:

  • Minimum 30 hours/week
