About

Since January 2017, the journal Evolution has included a new “Digests” section, which contains short (~500 word) news articles about selected original research included in the journal. These digests are published online and linked to their corresponding original research articles. Their purpose is two-fold:

  1. To improve accessibility of research published in Evolution to evolutionary biologists outside of the original article’s subfield of specialization.
  2. To provide added value by i) placing the research in a broader context than described in the original paper, ii) adding figures or diagrams illustrating the methods or findings, and/or iii) offering new insights on other implications/applications of the research or avenues of further study.

The journal is currently receiving digest submissions about Original Articles and Brief Communications from students, researchers, and professionals. Digest submissions undergo a limited peer review for acceptability. We encourage submissions from early-career researchers in particular. Peer review of submissions goes through authors of the original manuscript and an editorial staff member. If you are interested in contributing a digest to the next issue of Evolution, please select an article from the list of accepted articles, review the writing instructions, and follow the submission instructions by the due date listed. If you have any questions, please contact the editors. Digests will be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis. For email notifications when new available articles are posted, please email Kati Moore at evolutiondigests@gmail.com to be added to the mailing list.
