September 1st was Day 1 for Rowena Dolor, MD, MHS, co-PI, along with Li-Tzy Wu, Scd, Rn, MA, both from Duke, heading up a large clinical trials network (CTN) involving 6 partners across the mid-South.
Six locations in the mid-South
These research sites include Meharry-Vanderbilt, Mid-South Clinical Data Research Network, the Duke Primary Care Research Consortium, UNC NCnet – Family Medicine, Child/Adolescent Health, MURDOCK registry and biorepository, Kannapolis NC, and the Carolinas Healthcare System, Charlotte, NC.
The grant supports the research infrastructure
Dolor’s award is an infrastructure grant from NIH, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, to conduct whatever studies are needed within the Clinical Trials Network.
Our first study is identifying pediatric clinics for screening adolescents for marijuana use and randomization to a brief counseling intervention or usual care.
according to Dolor.
Clinical Trials Networks can make a difference
There’s special value to these community-based settings. We want to know if the previously demonstrated successes in research settings translate to locales where most receive treatment. The CTN also provides a diverse population and platform for such study.
This mid-South partnership is one of 13 groups in a framework across the U.S. Leadership of mid-South by Dr. Dolor is a large responsibility, one with a vision for rapid, multi-site testing and results ultimately to help patients in many different treatment settings. Kudos to Dr. Dolor for her steadiness at the helm of primary care research.
