Duke-Exeter Initiator Grant: Archaeology Workshop – Conflict and displacement in the Roman empire (December 1, 2022)

Ioana Oltean, João Fonte and Alicia Jiménez will present papers at Duke University funded by a Duke-Exeter Initiator grant. This project will build synergies for collaborative research between Exeter- and Duke-based applicants exploring the materialities of Roman conquest and its implications for indigenous mobility and migration patterns within the Roman Empire.

  • João Fonte (University of Exeter): ‘Roman-Indigenous Interaction in northern Portugal and southern Galicia (Northwest Iberia)’
  • Alicia Jiménez (Duke University): ‘An archaeology of violence: the Roman camps near Numantia (Renieblas, Spain)’
  • Iona Oltean (University of Exeter): ‘Dacia and the Roman conquest: a story of space and laser’

The workshop will take place at Duke’s Rubenstein Library (room 249), on December 1, 2022, between 4pm and 6pm. All welcome and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served after the talks.
