One unique aspect of this research study is the treatment design. It was developed to act like real-world clinical care. For example, if your doctor thinks a treatment is working, he/she will keep you on that treatment, but if your doctor does not think the treatment is working, he/she will change the treatment.
This study will look at your stress symptoms at the beginning, at 4 weeks, and at 12 weeks. At 4 weeks, the study will determine whether your treatment will change for the last 8 weeks. Here is a diagram of how this study will work if you’re enrolled; an explanation follows.
If you choose to join the study, you will be randomly assigned (a fair, 50/50 chance) into 1 of 2 groups for 4 weeks:
- Cancer Distress Coach, where you will download the app and have full access to all of the app’s features.
- Usual Care, where you will continue daily life without downloading the app.
After the first 4 weeks, you will complete surveys to see whether your stress symptoms have changed. Based on those surveys, you may stay in the same group or be randomly assigned for the final 8 weeks into 1 of 2 groups:
- Mobile Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or mCBT, where you will get therapy that looks at how your thoughts and actions to a situation or event affect your mood, and helps you learn different ways of thinking and acting in those situations or events in order to improve your mood.
- Mobile Coaching or mCoaching, where you will be coached on best ways to use the CaDC app to help cope with your stress.
Three months after completing the intervention we will ask you to complete a set of follow-up surveys. During that time, you can still use the app, and the study team will be available for support.
