Welcome to the website for our interdisciplinary symposium: Fast Movements, Impacts, and Deformations.
From July 19-21, 2022, we are thrilled to be hosting a symposium at the Washington Duke Inn at Duke University.
Registration deadline is June 15, 2022.
This symposium brings together biologists, materials scientists, physicists, engineers, and mathematicians to delve into the interdisciplinary realm of fast movements – specifically fast movements that can be performed many times, are powered by pre-loaded materials, and are often controlled with latch-like mechanisms. These systems push the limits of technology – from ultra high speed imaging to novel, tiny robots – and push the limits of our foundational understanding of the structural control of high energy density events. To date, the best examples of these systems are found in living creatures.
This symposium is an all-inclusive multi-day event that will build deep connections across disciplines, career stages, and diverse communities. Our choice to host the event at the Washington Duke Inn offers a setting to encourage focused and comfortable engagement at a gorgeous, 4-star hotel, with inclusive housing and meals prepared by top chefs. The Inn is nestled amidst beautiful forested walking and running trails, has a pool, comfortable indoor and outdoor seating and dining areas, and is just across the street from Duke University’s beautiful campus.
