Duke Small Animal Irradiator Service Center
The irradiator shared resource (SAIC) provides support for investigators by offering several options for the irradiation of both cells and small animals. The facility provides the Duke research community with access to four X-ray units. These units are available at different locations throughout the campus.
- Xstrahl CIX3 320kV Self-Contained Cabinet Irradiators: These are located in the Sands building animal facility and the GSRB2 barrier facility. The former is available for the irradiation of both small animals and cells, while the latter is primarily used for small animal irradiation.
- Xstrahl 225kV SARRP (Small Animal Radiation Research Platform): Installed in November 2022, this unit is housed in the GSRB2 barrier facility.
- X-RAD 160: This unit is located in MSRB3 and is used exclusively for in vitro cell work.
Investigators can use these units independently after receiving training and clearance from radiation safety. Alternatively, they can request to have the irradiations performed by the shared resource staff. Please note that there is a fee for using the unit, regardless of whether it is operated by a user or a staff member.
