The Duke Hematology T32 Training Program was pleased to host two medical students for summer research programs

Logan Long is currently a 2nd year medical student at UNC School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, NC. Logan attended East Carolina University where she majored in Public Health.  Logan participated in the Hematology T32 program from May 30-July 21, 2023. Logan worked in the lab of Dr Nirmish Shah to perform studies on “Understanding baseline wearable biometric data for patients with sickle cell disease and correlations to symptoms such as pain and fatigue.”

 

Mahalah Joseph is currently a 2nd year medical student at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine-Florida International University in Miami, FL. Mahalah attended University of Florida for her undergraduate studies where she majored in Health Science.  Mahalah participated in the Hematology T32 program from June 18th, 2023-July 28th, 2023. Mahalah worked in Dr. Tim McMahon’s lab to perform studies on “Effect of Allosteric Modulator MCP-435 on RBC ATP export in Sickle Cell Patients.”

The Duke Hematology T32 Training Program was pleased to host two medical students for summer research programs.

Cheyennae Barbee is currently a 2nd year medical student at Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) in Harrogate, TN. Cheyennae attended Virginia Commonwealth University where she majored in Biology and Chemistry.  Cheyennae participated in the Hematology T32 program from May 23-July 29, 2022. Cheyennae worked in Dr. Arepally’s lab to perform studies on complement activation in immune thrombocytopenia.

 

 

 

Caroline Ezekwesili is currently a 2nd year medical student at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine-Florida International University. Caroline attended Rutgers University for her undergraduate studies where she majored in Biology.  Caroline participated in the Hematology T32 program from June 20-July 29th, 2022. Caroline worked in Dr. Zennadi’s lab to perform studies on cilia proteins in sickle cell disease.

Congratulations to T32 Alum, Dr. Charity Oyedeji for an R03 Award

 

Congratulations to Dr. Charity Oyedeji, a faculty member in the Division of Hematology, and former T32 Trainee (2018-2019 and 2020-2021) for receiving the National Institutes of Aging, Grant for Early Medical/Surgical Specialists’ Transition to Aging Research (GEMSSTAR) R03 award (08/15/2021 – 04/30/2023). Her project “Characterizing Frailty in Older Adults with Sickle Cell Disease Using a Sickle Cell Frailty Index (FI-SCD)” seeks to develop a frailty index for older adults with sickle cell disease with the hopes of preventing frailty, improving function, and reducing mortality.

Uzoamaka Obodo (“Uzo”) is a rising 2nd year medical student at Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) in Harrogate, TN. She received the ASH Minority Medical Student Award Program and worked with Dr. JJ Strouse to perform a retrospective study to understand the impact of environmental exposures in pediatric patients with sickle cell disease.  

 

 

Jasmene Abernathy is a rising 2nd year medical student at Meharry medical College in Nashville TN.  She was sponsored by Dr. Jennifer Rothman on a quality improvement project to enhance education of  young adults in the Sickle Cell transition program.  

 

 

Both scholars participated in a 6 week research experience and participated in curricular activities sponsored by the Office of Physician-Scientist Development Program.
