Postdoctorate Fellow Qualifications

1) Stated commitment to an academic career in transfusion medicine and hematology (for both postdoctoral fellows and medical students), or for post-doctoral trainees, other related fields described in this application;

2) Strong interest in basic biomedical research, clinical research, or health services/outcome research in the fields of transfusion medicine and hematology; research experience and prior productivity a plus;

3) Demonstrated past excellence in previous endeavors, including undergraduate studies for medical students and graduate school, medical school, and/or clinical training programs for post-doctoral fellows.

4) Post-doctoral trainees will have completed a doctoral degree (MD, PhD, or both). Those with an MD will, in general, will have completed board requirements for certification in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or Pathology (or rarely, other clinical disciplines).

5) For internists and pediatricians not in the Clinical Investigator Pathway, trainees will have completed clinical training in internal medicine or pediatrics as well as 12-18 months in hematology and/or oncology.

6) Trainees in the Clinical Investigator Pathway will have completed a total of 3 years of clinical training, in accordance with ABIM policies.

7) Only applicants who are United States citizens or permanent residents and who express the desire of pursuing an academic research career in this country are considered candidates for acceptance.

Duration of Training and Effort Allocation

  • Trainees will need to commit to a minimum of two years of research training to participate in the T32. Exceptions will include trainees who obtain alternative research funding after one year, or trainees who wish to have a third year of research training in close pursuit of a mentored training award.
  • Trainees must spend a minimum of 75% of total effort in a supervised research project conducted in the laboratory or clinical research area of a program preceptor.
  • Those trainees who are part of a clinical fellowship program in Medicine or Pediatrics Hematology/Oncology programs will continue clinical activities, with a total commitment to clinical activities of <25%.
  • PhD scientists will have no required duties outside the mentor’s laboratory and their research project, although they are encouraged to pursue clinical or industry shadowing opportunities.
