Grading Scheme

SONY DSC

Your final grade will be based on:

Participation grade (16%), six reading quizzes (12%), assignments (12%), field notebook (10%), in-class presentation (20%), final exam (30%).

Participation: You will be assessed based on your participation in all aspects of the course, which includes classroom time, and time on our fieldtrip. Assessment is based on the quality of your academic participation, as well as your role in our community (e.g. willingness to help out with chores on the trip, being on time, courtesy and respect for others, flexibility, enthusiasm, etc.).

Reading quizzes:  You will be doing readings from our textbook and answering Canvas quiz questions.  You will have two attempts to get full credit

Field notebook:  You will be taking notes on your observations throughout our trip to Yellowstone.  You will be thoroughly briefed on how to take good notes, and what kind of notes, in your field notebook, later in the semester.

Assignment Quizzes:  Throughout the semester we will be watching a handful of Yellowstone-themed videos or movies.  Following each, you will be asked to take an online Sakai quiz (as homework).  You will receive TWO attempts to get a full score on these quizzes. (to be announced).  Quizzes serve to crystallize out and review the important points of each documentary/film. In addition, there will be a handful of take-home exercises that you will hand in the following week for grading.

Presentation Project:   A 20-minute multimedia presentation on that topic to the class

Final Exam: Held on the last day of class, this 75 minute “final” exam will cover information from lecture, lab, and the fieldtrip
