Grading Scheme

SONY DSC

Your final grade will be based on:

Participation: You will be assessed based on your participation in all aspects of the course (10% of your final grade), which includes classroom time, and time on our fieldtrip. Assessment is based on the quality of your academic participation, as well as your role in our community (e.g. willingness to help out with chores on the trip, being on time, courtesy and respect for others, flexibility, enthusiasm, etc.).

Geological Blog: You will write a blog for a subset of the sites we will visit on our fieldtrip.  (10% of final grade).

Multimedia Quizzes:  Throughout the semester we will be watching a handful of Yellowstone-themed videos or movies.  Following each, you will be asked to take an online Sakai quiz (as homework).  You may take these quizzes an unlimited number of times until you get a full score before their due dates (to be announced).  Quizzes serve to crystallize out and review the important points of each documentary/film. (15% of your final grade)

Ecological Project:  A 6-7 page paper (15%) on a nature/ecology subject of your choice (list of topics provided below) and a 10-minute multimedia presentation on that topic (25%) to the class (to be given on November 29th) – papers due on December 10th at midnight in Sakai Dropbox.  Absolutely NO EXCEPTIONS.

Final Exam: Held on the last day of class, this 75 minute “final” exam (25%) will cover information from lecture, lab, and the fieldtrip
