Our planet is confronted by urgent challenges such as global warming, resource depletion, heritage loss, environmental pollution, biodiversity loss, and compounded disasters. Scholars in APSI’s global network are increasingly exploring how critical research practices can contribute to the collaborative effort to deepen understanding of shared environmental agendas and for pursuing a more sustainable and equitable world.

In addition to connecting researchers whose work focuses on environmental topics that affect Asia, the network will contribute to advancing the field more broadly by providing an annual forum to foster the exchange of ideas on emerging questions. Select junior and senior scholars will engage an informed audience dedicated to refining works-in-progress, helping them achieve success in their disciplines and giving them the tools to collaborate effectively with local stakeholders to produce outcomes that are relevant to the communities involved.

APSI’s concept for this network emphasizes the essential interconnectedness of academic disciplines, research methodologies, and regional knowledge. Impactful research on Asia’s environmental topics requires productive conversations between the social sciences and humanities disciplines and can offer valuable insights and conceptual tools for scholars as well as the public. Additionally, scholars can contribute powerful research tools and provide essential context through which policymakers and members of the public can better understand environmental issues affecting Asia, past and present.
