Remembering Mr. Lee Kuan Yew

On March 28th, Duke SSA held a remembrance event for Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. Mr. Lee held this post from 1965 to 1990 and is most credited for the Singapore that exist today. Pragmatic, determined and with an unwavering love for the nation, Mr. Lee did what many said was impossible and transformed a former colonial outpost to the first world city that many admire today.

The event started with current SSA president, Zachary Lim, giving a speech about the impact Mr. Lee had on not just Singaporeans but on people from all around the world before it was opened up to others to share their memories about Mr. Lee. A condolence book, which will be mailed back to Singapore, was available for the attendees to sign. Besides Duke’s students, there was a number of Singaporean families from the area that attended. One family even drove three and a half hours to attend this event, a clear representation of the impact that Mr. Lee had on Singaporeans.

Duke’s SSA would like to send our condolences to Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong and family. May Mr. Lee Kuan Yew rest in peace.
