Courtney Van Houtven, PhD, a GIM health services researcher with interests in aging and economics, was honored to be an invited speaker for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs Traumatic Brain Injury State-of-the Art Research Summit, August 24-25, 2015. Her topic was “Caregivers of Veterans with TBI: Economic Impacts”.
Secretary McDonald and the VA Office of Research and Development (ORD) are hosting the summit to address the many knowledge gaps that continue to exist regarding TBI. This Veteran-centric summit brought together leading researchers in TBI from VA, DoD and academia to assess past research efforts, our current understanding of TBI today, and potential future research directions.
Introductions were given by several dignitaries: Timothy J. O’Leary, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Research and Development Ocer Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D., Representative of the Under Secretary for Health The Honorable Robert A. McDonald, Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
Day 2 of the summit presented 4 concurrent sessions. The track with Dr. Van Houtven was “Caregivers of Veterans with TBI”. Other tracks this day were Pathobiology of TBI-related Neurodegenerative disease, Best Practices/Clinical Guidelines, and Comorbidities II: Sensory Dysfunction/ Pain.
