The Stead Tread 5K Fun Run benefits Lincoln Community Health Center in Durham, a clinic with a mission to assist underserved patients in Durham County. This 4th annual event is led by Dr. Matthew Crowley, leader of the Kempner Society, one of the Stead Academic Societies serving our medicine residency. The event’s $25 registration fee includes an official Stead Tread 2015 T-shirt – but these shirts are going fast, so register ASAP to reserve your size!
Participants are welcome to run or walk, and strollers are permitted – kids under 12 walk/run for free (but should be registered by their parent/guardian). In case you cannot make the race this year, donations can be made securely through the website. Questions? Email steadtread5k@gmail.com.
We’re grateful also for strong leadership of Dr. Sharon Rubin. Dr. Rubin is the Team Captain at Pickett Road for the Triangle Heart Walk.
Dr. Rubin tells us: “We are encouraging everyone in clinic to do community service and charity work without a lot of money but just commitment of time. If you drive by Pickett you can see one of the initiatives is the the garden and flowers out front! Someone is assigned everyday to water the plants.”
And, with a personal commitment, Dr. Rubin writes on the team page for the Heart Walk (click on her name on this Duke page and note the long list of teams!): “I am walking for my grandmother who had high blood pressure, heart failure and stroke. She loved to cook fried fish with lots of salt. My mother too has high blood pressure. I have vowed to keep cardiovascular disease at bay with a good diet and exercise. I want my patients and my clinic to support awareness for heart disease as this kills more patients every year. Why? … Life, life is why. Thanks in advance for your support.”
Last year, Duke Heart Walk teams raised more than $94,000 for the Triangle Heart Walk. This year, we believe we can do even more. Help us achieve our goal of raising $100,000 with 150 teams participating to support the American Heart Association’s mission of building healthier lives, free of heart disease and stroke.
Every Duke walker who participates will receive a FREE Duke T-shirt at the Heart Walk.
