Here at DCBD, we do a wide variety of things under the umbrella of ballroom dance! This page is here to provide more insight into what we do as a team and as a community. You can find information on our competitions, social dance, performances, and ballroom instruction.
Competition
As a competitive team, we attend at least five competitions a year, both locally and nationally. In recent years, we have attended the following competitions:
- DC DanceSport Inferno – College Park, MD
- Triangle Open – Raleigh, NC
- Cackalacky Ballroom Challenge – Raleigh, NC
- Carolina Ballroom Brawl – Chapel Hill, NC
- National Collegiate DanceSport Championships – Pittsburgh, PA
Performance
Many of our members choose to participate in performances for the Duke community. Past performances include:
- WorlDuke
- Viennese Ball
- Swing Showcase
- O-Show
- Coming Out Day
Many of these performances can be viewed on ourĀ YouTube!
Social
Because social interaction is at the heart of ballroom dance, we often host social dances that are open to the whole Duke community! These dances are a great way to meet new people, learn to dance, and potentially discover an interest in ballroom. As a group, we attend socials hosted by other teams, and many of our members dance non-ballroom dances like salsa and Fusion socially. We also have team dinners and similar social events for our DCBD family!
Classes
We have members that dance at all levels, from complete beginners to high-level national competitors. As a result, we offer lessons tailored to all skill levels with amazing professional coach Andy Carlson.
For anyone interested in joining, we really mean it when we say “beginner”! Most of our members have no prior ballroom experience, and many have no other dance training. Our beginner classes are designed for people with no ballroom experience, so if you’re interested, check out our interest workshops!
