On the asymptotic stability of shear flows and vortices

Oct 19, 2021

Hao Jia, University of Minnesota

Abstract:

The long time dynamic of two dimensional incompressible Euler equation is difficult to understand due to the lack of global relaxation mechanism. Numerical simulations and physical experiments show that coherent vortices play an important role in the dynamics for a long time. In this talk, we will review some recent results in the nonlinear asymptotic stability and inviscid damping of shear flows, and report new progress in the vortex symmetrization problem. This is based on joint work with A. Ionescu.
