Equilibration and oscillations in Becker-Doering clustering models

Bob Pego, Carnegie Mellon University

Abstract:

The Becker-Doering equations model clustering processes associated with first-order phase transitions—for example, the statistically unlikely process of raindrop formation in clouds.  I will review some recent results regarding the dynamics of these models, discussing: the cutoff phenomenon (as in card
shuffling) for Becker-Doering equilibration dynamics; temporal oscillations in a closed Becker-Doering-type model including an atomization reaction; and oscillations in a formal model of physical Becker-Doering models with small-scale source and large-scale sinks.
