Three new faculties will join CMCS this fall
Konstantinos Efstathiou, Shixin Xu and Xiaoqian Xu will join Zu Chongzhi Center for Mathematics and Computational Sciences (CMCS) this fall semester. Here are their brief biography:
Konstantinos Efstathiou will join CMCS as an Associate Professor of Mathematics of Duke Kushan University. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Physics from the University of Athens, Greece, and his Ph.D. in Physics from the Universite Littoral Cote d’Opale, France, in 2004 with the highest distinction, “tres honorable avec les felicitations du jury.” From 2005 to 2012, he was postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Mathematics, University of Groningen, the Netherlands. In 2013 and 2014, he was a lecturer at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China, where he also served as acting Head of Department. In 2014, he returned to Groningen where he held an Assistant Professor position prior to joining DKU. His research interests lie in the general areas of dynamical systems and mathematical physics with the main focus being on the geometry of integrable Hamiltonian systems and the dynamics of coupled oscillator networks. He has published a monograph on integrable Hamiltonian systems and his research work has appeared in some of the most prestigious journals in his field. In his 14-year teaching career, he has taught a multitude of Mathematics and Physics courses at introductory and advanced levels. He has received a best teacher award for his course on Calculus for Chemistry and has obtained an Undergraduate Teaching Qualification. His teaching interests at DKU include foundational and advanced Mathematics courses with emphasis on issues of teaching innovation and student activation and inclusion.
Shixin Xu will join CMCS as an Assistant Professor for Mathematics of Duke Kunshan University. He received his B.Sc. in Mathematics (Hons) from Ocean University of China and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Science and Technology, China, in 2013. From 2013 to 2017, he held postdoctorate positions at the National University of Singapore, the University of Notre Dame and University of California Riverside (U.S.), and the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences (Canada). His research interests are machine learning and data-driven model for diseases, multiscale modeling of complex fluids, homogenization theory and numerical analysis.
Xiaoqian Xu will join CMCS as an Assistant Professor for Mathematics of Duke Kunshan University. He received his B.S. (Hons) in Mathematics from Zhejiang University and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2016). He did his postdoctorate research in Carnegie Mellon University and the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics, Brown University, from 2016 to 2019. Dr. Xu;s research interests are mathematical modeling of mixing in fluids, investigating the properties of solutions to some types of fluid mechanics equations and studying the time-fractional differential equations. At DKU, his teaching interests include Mathematical Foundations and advanced courses in pure Math.
