LumeCube: Portable but Powerful Lighting

By: Mich Donovan

One of the quickest ways to make an amateur video feel more professional is adding some decent lighting. Unfortunately, typical lighting equipment can be bulky and hot. The LumeCube seeks to resolve this in providing the most light while taking up the least amount of space possible.

Measuring 1.5 inches on all sides and weighing 3.5 ounces, the LumeCube’s incredibly compact and durable casing might remind you of a GoPro. Its brightness ranges from 150-1500 lumens, with a native color temperature at 6000K. It runs on a charge that lasts about four hours.

For our recording purposes, we’re looking at including it in our video laptop kits. We’ve mounted it on a rig that will allow the lumecube to hover over our webcam like so:

In our use case of recording from a webcam in a typical office, we found that the LumeCube was too bright without a diffuser. While the light itself is $80, the custom bulb diffuser set is an additional $30, which in turn can only be attached by a custom harness which is an additional $50. This effectively makes light cost twice it’s listed price. Additional flat/tinted diffusers are also available in sets for $30.

Here’s a sample of images collected from a Logitech C920, with no, low, and medium light coming from the LumeCube with the most opaque diffusion bulb:
