The Origins of Cardiovascular Sex Differences: Insights for Women’s Health from Across the Tree of Life

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, who are nine times more likely than men to develop an acute form of heart failure. While many mechanisms underlying clinically significant cardiovascular sex differences have been identified, few innovative approaches have emerged to protect at-risk patients. In this talk, Dr. Barbara Natterson-Horowitz:

  1. Introduces a novel methodology for generating and testing evolutionary trade-off hypotheses.
  2. Demonstrates how applying this methodology to cardiovascular disease uncovers the origins of cardiovascular sex differences and suggests translational strategies to improve women’s cardiovascular health.
