The BOOST Program is open to rising 6th-8th graders in Durham Public Schools. BOOST students are referred to as Scholars and are grouped by grade level into three cohorts:
- The BOOST Cohort (6th graders) focuses on learning to ask good scientific questions.
- The XL Cohort (7th graders) focuses on developing good hypotheses.
- The XXL Cohort (8th graders) focuses on deepening scientific understanding.
All BOOST programming is free of charge for admitted scholars. Core BOOST activities include:
- IMMERSION WEEK (typically in the summer). During this week we expose scholars to STEM through interactive and engaging activities led by community partners and local DPS teachers.
- SCIENCE SATURDAYS (monthly). During each Science Saturday we explore the wonders of STEM through hands-on activities and expose Scholars to students, faculty, advocates, and others engaging in STEM in Durham and beyond.
- FIELD TRIPS. Each cohort has field trips where they dive deep into a specific STEM area led by people working in STEM. Scholars have the opportunity to see and “feel” what it is like to be in that STEM career area.
- SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM (early summer). This is our culminating event where Scholars share and reflect upon their experiences in BOOST over the year. The event is open to the public and a special invitation is extended to Scholars’ families as well as Duke students, faculty, and staff.
BOOST will continue to operate in consideration of current safety recommendations and Minors at Duke policies. This means that BOOST may offer both virtual and in-person programming.
El programa BOOST está abierto a estudiantes de sexto a octavo grado en las escuelas públicas de Durham. Los estudiantes de BOOST se conocen como Scholars y se agrupan por nivel de grado en tres grupos:
- La Cohorte BOOST (estudiantes de sexto grado) se enfoca en aprender a hacer buenas preguntas científicas.
- La Cohorte XL (estudiantes de 7º grado) se enfoca en desarrollar buenas hipótesis.
- La cohorte XXL (estudiantes de octavo grado) se enfoca en profundizar la comprensión científica.
Toda la programación de BOOST es gratuita para los estudiantes admitidos. Las actividades principales de BOOST incluyen:
- SEMANA DE INMERSIÓN (normalmente en verano). Durante esta semana, exponemos a los estudiantes a STEM a través de actividades interactivas e interesantes dirigidas por socios de la comunidad y maestros locales de DPS.
- SÁBADOS DE CIENCIA (mensual). Durante cada sábado de ciencia, exploramos las maravillas de STEM a través de actividades prácticas y exponemos a los estudiantes de BOOST a los estudiantes, profesores, organizadores y otras personas que participan en STEM en Durham y más allá.
- EXCURSIONES. Cada cohorte tendrá viajes de campo en los que se sumergirán profundamente en un área STEM específica dirigida por personas que trabajan en STEM. Los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de ver y “sentir” lo que es estar en esa área profesional de STEM.
- SIMPOSIO DE CIENCIA (principios de verano). Este es nuestro evento culminante donde los estudiantes comparten y reflexionan sobre sus experiencias en BOOST durante el año.
