The LeBauers: Sidney, Maurice,Joe, Sam, and Eugene

Medical Doctors
… and a Mean String Quintet

LeBauer Healthcare, one of the largest medical practices in the Southeast, had modest beginnings. In the 1920s, businessman Joe LeBauer moved his silk hosiery operation from New Jersey to Greensboro. His sons—Sidney, an internist and cardiologist, and Maurice, a general surgeon—started practicing medicine on the third floor of downtown Greensboro’s Jefferson Pilot building in 1931. Challenging local custom, they kept an integrated waiting room.

Sidney’s three sons joined the practice in the 1960s and 1970s: Joe, a cardiologist; Sam, a astroenterologist; and Eugene, a pulmonary and allergy specialist. A fourth son, Sidney, Jr., died of heart disease two days before he was to graduate from Duke’s School of Medicine. Today LeBauer HealthCare is a leader in clinical research and has eight branch offices in Guilford and Rockingham counties.

Although 80- to 100-hour work weeks were common for the LeBauer clan, music was a family passion. Each child played a different instrument, and on Sunday afternoons the family living room featured LeBauer trios, quartets, quintets, and even sextets. The family rallied community and corporate support for the Eastern Music Festival, founded in Greensboro by their cousin, Sheldon Morgenstern.

[Our Father taught us that] all activities had to be constructive—have a long-term value. — SAM LEBAUER
