Team Science

Team science is a collaborative effort to address a scientific challenge that leverages the strengths and expertise of professionals trained in different fields. Many institutions recruit professionals who can help with team science approaches for clinical and translational research. 

This introductory online module describes the evidence supporting the value of working across disciplines and the science of how we can do this well. Learners will be able to recognize the value of Team Science and describe the Science of Team Science, a field of study which is aimed at understanding what makes science teams work well.

Terms and definitions related to team science

Team science is a collaborative effort that leverages the strengths and expertise of professionals trained in different fields to address a scientific challenge. Team science activities are collaborative and often cross-disciplinary (which includes multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary) approaches to answering research questions about particular phenomena.

The SciTS field is concerned with understanding and managing circumstances that facilitate or hinder the effectiveness of collaborative science and evaluating the outcomes of collaborative science.

Epistemic Humility is humility or modesty regarding one's own knowledge and recognizing the limits of one's own knowledge.
