Credit Cards No Longer Accepted In-Person

As of 4/15/13, credit card payments for software through OIT will only be accepted online.  The credit card machine has been removed from the OIT Service Desk – The Link, and the line has been disconnected.  We have averaged fewer than 3 in-person credit card transactions per month at the Link since the implementation of eCommerce (e.g. the option to pay with a credit card online), and the monthly cost of the phone line to support the credit card machine is not justifiable.

IR forms and checks will still be accepted at the Link.

SPSS Statistics Grace Period Begins Today; SPSS Amos licenses will no longer be offered

SPSS Statistics Grace Period Begins

The grace period for SPSS Statistics purchases starts today.  Any licensing purchased (renewal or new) between April 1 and July 1 will include a free renewal which will extend the expiration date to July 1, 2014.

Feel free to go ahead and renew your SPSS licenses now even though we don’t yet have the renewal codes from IBM.  Those purchasing with a credit card online will have access to the new activation keys automatically when they are available by visiting the main OIT Software site and clicking “View software you have ordered.”  Those purchasing with a check or IR will be sent the new keys automatically via e-mail.  A notification will be sent out via the OIT Software Licensing e-mail list when new keys are available.

SPSS Amos Licenses Will No Longer Be Offered through OIT

The licensing program for IBM SPSS Amos was not successful, and we were not able to resell enough licenses at $50 per year to justify continuing the program for another year.  We apologize for the inconvenience.

IBM SPSS Amos licensing may be purchased by students for less than $50 through http://dukeoit.onthehub.com (statistics tab – IBM SPSS Amos 21)

Faculty and Staff using Amos or other modules not included in our site license may consider purchasing the IBM SPSS 21 Premium Faculty GradPack, which for $258 and a $4.99 fee includes Statistics Base, Advanced Statistics, Regression, Custom Tables, Data Preparation, Missing Values, Forecasting, Decision Trees, Direct Marketing, Complex Samples, Conjoint, Neural Networks, Bootstrapping, Categories, Exact Tests, Visualization Designer, SamplePower, and Amos.

Amos is for Windows only, so Mac users purchasing the premium faculty GradPack will not receive Amos.  The GradPack can be purchased through http://dukeoit.onthehub.com on the statistics tab.

JMP and JMP Pro Licenses Updated

The JMP site license has been renewed, and licenses will now expire on 6/30/2013.  This short license period is so that we can align all of the expiration dates of the various SAS products at Duke.

The installers for JMP, JMP Pro, and SAS Simulation Studio have been updated and renewal licenses are posted on the JMP Download Page.  The renewal licenses are text files, and you will need to either right-click and save the file you need, or copy the text into a new text file and save it on your computer.  Installers are only available for the latest versions of the software.  Renewal licenses are available for versions 7, 8, 9, and 10.

JMP, JMP Pro, and SAS Simulation Studio are offered as no-cost downloads and can be installed for free on an unlimited number of computers by Duke Faculty, staff, affiliates and students for Duke use.

SAS software now available at no cost through grant to NCICU

We are pleased to announce that SAS and NCICU have developed an agreement under which SAS has donated teaching, research, and administrative software to NCICU schools through a grant.  The initial grant period is 2 years, but this in-kind gift is projected to be an ongoing agreement between SAS and NCICU.  This means that all SAS software products at Duke for which OIT was selling licenses (SAS, JMP Clinical, and JMP Genomics) are now available at no cost.

How to Get Software and Renewal Licenses

Please visit the individual product pages and follow the steps to order software for access to download links and renewal license files.

All three products can be obtained in one of three ways:

  1. Connecting to the OIT SAS software depot (network share) and running the installer.  This method is the fastest, is free, and no downloading is required, but it can be somewhat technical.  Additionally, not all users, particularly those on some health system networks, will be able to install from the network share due to security restrictions.  For information on this, see the individual page(s) above.
  2. Downloading disk image files (ISOs) and either burning installation DVDs and installing from disk or extracting the compressed files into folders and using folders as you would DVDs to install.  This method is the most time-consuming because of the download and burn/extract process, but it is also free and is an alternative for those who cannot go pick up installation media or connect to the server to install over the network.  The SAS software suite consists of 7 DVD images.  JMP Clinical and Genomics are 3 DVD images each.  For download links, visit the individual page(s) above and order the software.
  3. Purchasing installation media and installing locally.  This method is fast and non-technical, but there is an additional fee for this option.  The SAS installation files are preloaded onto 32-GB USB drives and sold for $20 each.  Once SAS is installed, you can erase the files and use the drive for other purposes.  To purchase installation media, visit the individual page(s) above and order the software.

License Expiration Dates

SAS and OIT have agreed that synchronizing the expiration dates of the various SAS products is best.  All products that are currently expired or will expire before July have licenses available that will extend the expiration date to June 30, 2013 with a 90-day grace period (45 days of normal operation, then 45 days of operation with warnings after that before the software stops working).  We expect to be on an annual schedule after that with licenses expiring every June 30.

JMP Genomics licenses expire on September 14, 2013.  We expect to get licenses to extend the expiration date to June 30, 2014 when the other products are renewed this Summer.

JMP licenses will be on the same calendar.  A separate announcement will be sent out when these licenses are available.

Adding New Products to the License

Only products that Duke already licensed through OIT were made available through the grant initially, but additional academic and administrative SAS products can be added to the license at no additional cost by request.  We do not currently have a process in place for adding new products.  Please contact OIT to inquire about adding new products to the license.

License Restrictions

The license restrictions with regard to hardware and location are the same as before, however, the software may now be used for all Duke purposes and not just classroom teaching and research under the grant.

OIT to Discontinue Licensing Agreement for Stat/Transfer

Due to unforeseen licensing changes by Circle Systems which now prevent us from legally reselling their software and volume licensing on behalf of Duke, OIT will no longer be offering licensing for Stat/Transfer once the current licenses expire on 5/31/13. We have exhausted all options with this difficult vendor, including speaking with the owner directly. They require licenses be purchased only for named individual users at all times and will not allow cost recovery internally.  An unlimited site license is not available at all.

Licenses purchased through OIT will expire on 5/31/13.  Users are encouraged to investigate free alternatives available on the web.  Those that need to keep using the software after that date will need to purchase licensing through other channels.

Stat/Transfer can be ordered through Stata through the GradPlan (http://www.stata.com/order/new/edu/gradplans/direct-ship-pricing/), or directly through Circle Systems (http://www.stattransfer.com/ordering/store.html).  Both sites have several licensing options, and depending on the order, one vendor may be cheaper than the other.

Windows RDS CALs Added to Campus Agreement; Updated Version of LoggerPro Available

RDS CALs

Microsoft Remote Desktop Services client access licenses (RDS CALs) have been added to the campus agreement to cover faculty and staff device usage at Duke.

An RDS [device] CAL is required for each device that directly or indirectly accesses Windows Server software to interact with a remote graphical user interface (GUI) (using the Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services functionality or other technology).

Remote Desktop Services functionality is defined as those features or services that are running when enabling the Remote Desktop Services role and/or role service(s) in Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2012. This includes but is not limited to Remote Desktop Gateway, RemoteApp network software, Remote Desktop Web Access, Remote Desktop Connection broker, Remote Desktop session host, Remote Desktop Virtualization host, and RemoteFX.

Note: No RDS CALs are required for up to two users to access instances of the server software for administration purposes.

Visit https://oit.duke.edu/comp-print/software/license/detail.php?id=194 to request RDS CALs.

GraphPad Prism Licenses Now Available for Purchase

OIT has entered into a volume license agreement with GraphPad, and is selling activations of Prism software for $50 each.  Our Prism licenses will expire annually on 1/24 and will need to be renewed before that date at the then-current cost to continue working.

For the past 5 years, GraphPad Prism has been the most commonly requested product through our new software request form.  We were recently able to construct an agreement based on their lab license model.  Upon purchasing, Prism licensees will need to provide an e-mail address (or list of authorized e-mail addresses) associated with that number of activations purchased.  Each activation will be associated with one computer, and a license cannot be transferred from one computer to another.

Purchase GraphPad Prism licensing here.
