New Software Evaluation: Articulate

OIT Software Licensing is evaluating the product Articulate Storyline (e-learning authoring software) as a potential new volume license purchase.  Articulate also has a product called Studio, and the discount options appear to be the same.

We are collecting data to determine if a volume license for these products (offering them at a discount through OIT) makes sense.  Please have a look at the software and provide comments at the public Duke wiki page (https://wiki.duke.edu/display/OITSLP/Articulate) to help us with the decision.  The more responses, the better.

New Software Evaluations: Winclone & Boot Runner; Additional MATLAB offerings

Winclone & Boot Runner

OIT Software Licensing is evaluating the products Winclone and Boot Runner as potential new site license purchases.

Winclone allows you to easily image your bootcamp partition on your Mac.  Boot Runner allows you to quickly and easily manage booting into the Mac OS, Windows and/or Linux Environments.

We are collecting data to determine if a centrally-funded site license for these products makes sense.  Please have a look at the software and provide comments at the public Duke wiki page (https://wiki.duke.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=65110506) to help us with the decision.  The more responses, the better.

Additional MATLAB offerings

The folks at the MathWorks have extended offers to Duke to purchase self-paced online training vouchers in bulk and to add students to the site license.

In the case of training, they are offering seats of their MATLAB Fundamentals and MATLAB Programming Techniques online courses at a discount.  We would like to determine if the courses are something that people would buy through OIT if the discount were available.

Please comment on the Duke wiki here: MATLAB Self-Paced Training to help us determine if there is enough interest at Duke to offer these discounts.

In the case of MATLAB for Students, we would like to collect data to determine whether or not to add students to the campus license.  This would allow students to install MATLAB on their personal computers at no individual cost.

Please comment on the Duke wiki page for this at : MATLAB for Students to help us determine if this would make sense.  The more comments, the better.
We would also like to request that you participate in a short, anonymous survey about MATLAB at Duke: https://duke.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_3W1nYZ4uiEPD22F

TreeAge Pro Licensing Now Available through OIT

OIT Software Licensing is now offering TreeAge Pro licensing for $195 per computer per year.  This is a $200 discount off of the normal academic price of $395.

TreeAge Pro is the leader in visual modeling tools, allowing you to build and analyze decision trees to study any kind of problem.

Decision Trees

Build decision trees to analyze a business, research, financial or legal problem. The analysis tools allow you to calculate the expected value of each strategy and choose the optimal path. In addition, you can examine risk and uncertainty associated with each strategy.

Complex Models

Build Markov models, patient-specific simulation models and time-to-event models for healthcare analysis. Identify the optimal treatment strategy through cost-effectiveness analysis, net benefits and other healthcare reporting options.

Analysis

Apply sophisticated analysis tools to your model, including sensitivity analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, probability distributions and more.

These licenses are being resold to the Duke community as a cost-saving service.  No profit is made by OIT on the resale of licenses, and the cost may be adjusted as needed to recover the entire amount of the licensing purchased from TreeAge.  A license must be purchased for each computer on which TreeAge Pro software is installed.  Licenses will expire annually on July 29.

This software was requested for evaluation through OIT’s New Software Request process, and was approved by the OIT Software Licensing Commitee for volume licensing.

MATLAB License Renewed and Product Offering Updated

Duke’s MathWorks license has been renewed, and new installations of the software will expire on September 1, 2014.

Detailed renewal instructions for all versions of MATLAB, including links to license files and PLPs, can be found here: http://oit.duke.edu/comp-print/software/support/matlab.php.  Anyone with a standalone installation of version 2008a and newer can renew by launching MATLAB as an administrator and then going to Help -> Update Current Licenses, and clicking Update.  Installations pointing to a license server will not be renewed until the server license is renewed.

In addition to the license being renewed, the product offering has been updated.  Based on a year-long survey with over 700 respondents from Duke, the 5 least-used toolboxes have been replaced with the 5 most-requested toolboxes.

New products available:

* Distributed computing server is licensed for up to 32 workers (cores) per instance, and is a separate license from the MathWorks TAH license.  For access to this product, e-mail OIT Software Licensing.

Products being removed:

  • Aerospace Toolbox
  • Aerospace Blockset
  • Gauges Blockset
  • xPC Target
  • xPC Target Embedded Option

The license for these items will expire on September 1, 2013.  To continue using these products, you may either purchase an individual license directly from the MathWorks for $200 per year per product (xPC products are $500; xPC Target is required for xPC Embedded Option), or add a product back to the campus license for $700 per year each.  This is also the case for any standard product not currently on the license.
