Mac OS X Lion Purchase Options

Note: OS X 10.7 Lion is a new operating system, and you should talk to your IT department before upgrading due to possible compatibility issues.  OIT Software Licensing does not recommend that you upgrade at this time.

As many of you are aware, Duke ended its site license agreement with Apple for the Macintosh operating system on 7/8/2010.  This means that we will not be distributing OS X 10.7 Lion, and a license will need to be purchased for each computer that is upgraded.

Duke still has a license to OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for all Duke-owned Apple computers that were purchased prior to 7/8/2011, and we will continue to resell installation DVDs until we run out and provide backup images for these operating systems for these computers.

For OS X 10.7 Lion, individuals and departments are responsible for their own license purchases.  Individuals and departments purchasing fewer than 10 licenses can purchase licenses for $29.99 directly through Apple.  Departments (and maybe individuals) purchasing more than 10 licenses can purchase 20 or more licenses for $14.99 each directly through Apple at the volume license rate.  The AELP is available for departments as well, and the cost is $29.99 per year for a license for OS X, iLife, and iWork with a minimum of 25 computers.

If you purchased an Apple computer after June 6, 2011 that did not come with OS X 10.7 installed, you may upgrade to Lion for free through the OS X Lion Up to Date Program.
