Bass Connections: “Risk Analytics and Innovation for Community Climate Adaptation.” RESILE faculty led a year-long interdisciplinary Bass Connections project engaging 14 students across three applied research tracks: (1) assessing the potential of community-based catastrophe insurance (CBCI) to address risk protection gaps in coastal North Carolina; (2) cataloging and mapping technical assistance programs available to U.S. communities; and (3) developing metrics and a visualization tool for compound flood risk
Data+/Climate+: “Making Climate Hazard Risk Data Useful for North Carolina Communities.” In partnership with the NC Office of Recovery and Resilience (NCORR) and the town of Creswell, RESILE researchers mentored a student team through a summer Data+/Climate+ project focused on making climate hazard data actionable for local decision-makers. The team surveyed and mapped the town’s stormwater infrastructure, modeled sea-level rise impacts on flooding, and evaluated mitigation options.
Duke Climate Collaboration Symposium: “Risk Science for Climate Resilience.” In February 2024, RESILE co-hosted a two-day symposium in partnership with the Nicholas Institute. Day 1 featured a public event attended by nearly 100 Duke community members, including a keynote by the former President of the Reinsurance Association of America and a panel of experts from insurance, finance, climate modeling, and community sectors. Day 2 convened ~50 faculty, staff, and students for focused ideation on potential research directions. The event catalyzed cross-sector dialogue and helped surface priorities that RESILE is well-positioned to support.
Resilient Voices Community Outreach Symposium: RESILE coordinated Resilient Voices, a student-led symposium focused on amplifying narratives of climate risk and community resilience. The event featured speakers, panel discussions, a collaborative art exhibit with Duke Chapel and the Kenan Institute for Ethics, and a research/art showcase of student and faculty work. It also launched a student-edited special issue of The Lemur magazine, highlighting lived experiences of resilience.
