Seeding Change with Asian/American Grassroots Organizing with NC Asian Americans Together

KhooS Poster
Shania Khoo
Shania Khoo completed the 10-week Seeding Change National Fellowship with their host site North Carolina Asian Americans Together. With NCAAT, they were able to work closely with Asian American communities in the unique context of North Carolina, particularly through the lens of youth engagement. They got the chance to work on programming planning and facilitation, graphic design, and outreach to NCAAT’s youth base. They also got the time and support to do their own projects centered on abolition, including creating art highlighting the importance of youth education and empowerment for abolitionist politics and dreams.

  1. Wow, Shania! Thank you so much for sharing your experience working with NC Asian Americans Together this summer! I found your poster to be so riveting and informative, and I’m glad that you were able to explore many of your different passions through this internship. Your presentation has left me with two primary questions: 1) what steps did you go through to plan and realize your zine-making workshop? 2) How do you plan on utilizing the skills and confidence that you gained through working with NCAAT in political activist pursuits on campus?

This was really interesting to read about! Each of your bullet points under the “accomplishments” section were really unique, and I am interested in learning more about the work you did with the Durham County Jail as well as the SONG abolitionist group. I agree that civic engagement and youth empowerment is so important, and I think political education for minority communities, including the Asian American community, is something that definitely needs to be addressed.

  3. This sounds like such a cool summer experience Shania. I wasn‘t aware of NCAAT before reading your synopsis of the summer, but this makes me want to look into their other projects more, specifically the work done with prison abolition advocacy. I really love that you were able to incorporate your interest in art into the advocacy work that you were doing, and the prison abolition postcard you did is so cute. I can really see how much passion you had for the projects you worked on. Are there any projects from this summer that you plan to continue working on?
