What We Do

Weekly Meetings:

We meet your family at a convenient location for an hour each week.

Our Duke students will develop a relationship with your child and can help with anything going on in their lives.

Activities and Events:

We will provide free activities for your children to do with our Duke students. Additionally, we can provide your children opportunities to play sports with Duke athletes. We may also hold events at Duke and/or local community centers.

Our Mission

The purpose of the Duke New Neighbors Initiative is to foster long-term relationships with Durham students with refugee backgrounds to build community between Duke and Durham students, support students’ learning, help hone their language skills, strive for academic success, and build friendships. Meanwhile, we hope Duke students will embrace and learn cultural humility and learn from their ‘younger siblings’, as well. To do this, we will host weekly meetings with the youth ages Kindergarten to 12th Grade. This may involve in-person (indoor or outdoor) or online activities, homework practice, group projects, or other activities.
