Interviewer: Is there something you hope people will take from these stories?
Dr. Beverly Gray: I think there are a couple of things. One: that most of us in this work are just ordinary people that want to do the best for patients, that want to see the patients have full lives where they are healthy, where they can achieve what they want in life, and that we want our patients to be healthy, that the people providing this care are kind people. There are a lot of misperceptions around what abortion care providers are like. That they got the lowest grades in med school, that they couldn’t get jobs delivering babies. There are all of these misperceptions and flawed mental templates about what abortion providers are like, but this is not actually the case. There are many high achieving individuals that are in this field. This is not a money-making field by any means. This is service. If we wanted to make more money, believe me, there are plenty of jobs delivering babies and we could do those jobs any time. That’s part of our work and many of us also provide obstetric care, but I think that minimizes the importance of this work.
