Dr. Phyllis Leppert: When I was in Buffalo a doctor by the name of Dr. Slepian was actually killed. He was an OBGYN, he was an oncologist actually, he worked with a lot of women and was very beloved in the community, but he also worked with Planned Parenthood. He was known to this guy, and this man shot him and killed him. It caused a tremendous uproar. What I remember was a lot of people in my department were scared to death, and there was a woman who was working in that clinic and she had kids and she was really distraught — what do I do? I think I can’t do this anymore. Because, you would go to this website where this group would list all the people that they knew were providers in communities, you know, that were working in Planned Parenthood or places like that, and they had their pictures. And then when they were shot and killed they had a big X on them. That was on a website. So people were terrified. Politically, it was really difficult for these people who were working there. How do you decide what to do? If you’re shot and killed, you can’t help your patients, you can’t help your family, it’s a very very difficult thing.
