Provider #6: There’s a look in people’s eyes. I look in women’s eyes every day — and they’re saying “thank you”. People are swallowing a pill saying “I feel so relieved”. Just in the room right there: “I’m so relieved”. People are trying to tell you why they’re there — which by the way we never ask people why they’ve chosen an abortion. We know that if they’ve come it’s because they need it, but, often, they just need to tell you. So, you start to hear, “Oh I have two kids and one of them is autistic and my doctor wouldn’t do a tubal ligation and I just can’t. I can’t. I can’t”. The word “I can’t” is very common. People are very often denied tubal ligation, by the way, which is really hard to understand. Doctors are patronizing and think they are too young to know what they want or need in their life. They are forcing them to have an increased risk of pregnancy. People have so many tough circumstances. People are about to be deployed. People are about to be divorced — they’re in the process of a divorce. People try and get away from their partner. People are 14 years old. We see everything. And we see them leave, breathing a huge sigh of relief. And at least they have another chance at their lives.
