Interviewer: What should everyday people be doing?

Susan Yanow: I think they should be paying attention. They should be voting. They should be paying attention to attempts to gerrymander districts and stop that, so that their vote is worth something. They should be paying attention to policy. Not just abortion policy. But most people, including me, there’s a lot going on. It’s hard to take the time to really understand– what is this new development proposal that will put lab space into my neighborhood? How will that impact the price of rent, the price of property? And what will that mean in terms of displacing people? I need to understand that before I can be an intelligent (pause) before I can talk about– I mean, I don’t like the big lab space building, but that’s not a good enough reason. So, I think being educated. I think when it comes to abortion, I think every single person who has a uterus or knows someone who has a uterus should learn about abortion pills, know how to use them, understand them, know how to get them, keep a spare pack if you need– for friends if they need them. I think that’s an act of resistance and it’s an act of self-defense that’s really important.
