Susan Yanow: I don’t try to convince people [of] my opinion. I try to convince them that my opinion deserves their respect. So when I work in Mississippi and Alabama, which are very– and I am not Christian– but they’re very Christian, very biblical. And they think this is a Christian country. They assume I’m Christian. And we have conversations about what it means to be a Christian country. Is there room for people like, I say it– I’m Jewish. Is there room for me in this country? And they always say, “Oh, yes. Yes, yes, yes.” I said, “Well, my–” and I don’t say that I’m not religious, because, you know, but I say– “My religion teaches something different. Is there space for you to respect my religious beliefs?” I’m not asking them to give up their beliefs. But I think if there’s respect then people start to listen.
