Dr. Maria Small: So, I think sometimes people just don’t know who is going to have their best interest at heart. And that’s part of the reason some of the things we say, “Have an advocate with you”. That’s why doulas are becoming much more engaged and available not just for people who can pay out of pocket for doulas. Because people want to feel like they know they have somebody who is going to support them and advocate for them if the system that is supposed to be, by what we are trained, doing no harm, taking care of you no matter what the original inciting event was. They are not trusting that is going to happen. That is already a situation, especially for Black women who are already dying at higher rates. We are looking at deaths saying “that is a preventable death”, so why would they want to enter the healthcare system? That is what happened to the woman in Georgia. She was afraid to go to the hospital, so she died at home
