Dr. Maria Small: As an ultrasound provider, I have taken care of patients who, in the state of North Carolina, do not believe in abortion or access to abortion. And they’re diagnosed with conditions that may be lethal to the fetus. I’ve had a patient that had a baby who had no head. The head’s not developing normal – basically not developing at all – and that’s a lethal condition. In that setting, sometimes people elect to have an abortion. People who otherwise say that they would not have an abortion. So something that I not infrequently experience is individuals who are benefitting from access to reproductive healthcare who otherwise would think that they are opposed to abortion. Sometimes they call it humanitarian care for the fetus. Whatever they call it, it is an abortion.
