Dr. Katherine Farris: These laws force providers to only offer “wait and see”. And what they are waiting for is for this patient to start hemorrhaging or become septic; whereas if they did a D&E, their chance of dying is less than one tenth of one percent. If they are septic, or they are hemorrhaging actively, their chance of dying is very real and far too high. That is unacceptable––and yet this is where swaths of the country are right now. Which is why so many people, like our governor in his executive order, said that no state employee can be forced to travel to a banned state while they are pregnant. Not because they would be traveling there to get an abortion––but what if they are traveling there, and their water breaks and then they are forced into that conversation? Or [forced into] trying to somehow figure out how to cross state lines and get back home, so they can actually get standard of care medical care offered to them?
