Dr. Beverly Gray: I do think universal healthcare, childcare, all of those things, if we are thinking about tenets of reproductive justice, helping people be successful parents where they can thrive, and having all the things they need to care for their child, not live in hunger– it’s all connected. And so reproductive healthcare is one piece, but when you ask people what their main concern for the day is, it’s probably not whether or not the abortion laws are bad in North Carolina. It’s more about: Am I going to get a paycheck this week? Do I have enough food to feed my kids? Sometimes more basic things but those are connected to reproductive healthcare and helping people thrive. I think having healthcare in people’s communities is important, and not necessarily in the hospital system. Finding ways to decentralize some of that care and provide in those spaces that are most convenient for people is important.
