North Carolina Firefighter Cancer Cohort Study

To understand chemical exposures in firefighters

Our Mission:

Our Mission:

To understand chemical exposures in firefighters

The North Carolina Firefighter Cancer Cohort Study (NC FFCCS) is a research initiative aiming to tackle the issue of cancer risks among firefighters due to hazardous chemical exposures. This study seeks to identify specific chemicals that may contribute to cancer and is not limited to known substances like PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) found in aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF). It will also investigate other potential sources of exposure, including turnout gear, vehicles, and fire stations. As part of the National Firefighter Cancer Cohort Study, the long-term goal is to follow firefighters for 30 years.
By joining the National Firefighter Cancer Cohort Study, the NC FFCCS aims to contribute to a broader understanding of firefighter exposures across the country, which could lead to more comprehensive recommendations and strategies for reducing cancer risks in the fire service profession.
