Departmental success depends on many things coming together at the right time. Often it is the invisible employees that are responsible for making this happen. Rosa Johnson is one of those employees who works tirelessly in the School of Medicine HR Service Center to complete the payroll and on-boarding workflows for new employees, changes in employee status, and departing employees. She also works with employees during some of their critical life moments to process FMLA and other types of leaves. Without a consistent and disciplined approach to the payroll and leave processes, the return on the investment made by the the recruitment team will be delayed and the work product will suffer. Delayed or unclear leave processes leave both management and staff in a state of uncertainty at a time when certainty is needed most. Well managed processes provide clarity and reassurance.
Rosa focuses on her work in the service of staff and managers across the departments she supports. And, as I learned when I joined this department just over a year ago, Rosa is also a patient and exceptional teacher. In my previous role at Duke I had supervised these processes but had never worked directly in the recruitment or payroll systems. Needless to say, I had a lot to learn when I joined this team. Rosa welcomed me and made me feel like a colleague right away. She spent time teaching me the systems and the quirks of the systems. She answered my many questions with patience and grace on every occasion. And, of course, this only added to her daily routine.
Rosa Johnson exemplifies that which makes Duke an extraordinary place to work. I am grateful to know and work with Rosa Johnson. Thank you, Rosa!
