Keep Up the Great Work

It is the very first time for DIALYSIS RN and IV RN TEAM to collaborate in accessing a dialysis access. I was tasked to do a stat dialysis to a patient at bedside with a newly inserted HERO-GRAFT for dialysis. Patient’s potassium was 7.2 and had EKG changes. Her arm was very sore, red, swollen and edematous and she has been known as a “hard stick” as we call it in dialysis. I’ve called Chris RN (IV team charge RN) and Frank RN and they came to bedside asap and they were very helpful, they made it easy for me to cannulate a swollen, edematous, sore arm and help me visualize the vein for cannulation using their machine. They did not hesitate at all and gave their time even if helping accessing a dialysis access was out of their scope of practice. The patient was saved from transferring to an ICU room as she was able to dialyzed at bedside and we were able to correct her potassium that night. THIS is collaborative interdisciplinary team work. This is what Duke is all about.
