Samuel Johnson is a pharmacist at Duke Regional. He went above and beyond to help one of my patients get their life-saving medications when many roadblocks were encountered when trying to refill this medicine. When Duke’s employee insurance changed to Cigna, the specialty medication refill process using manufactuer assistance and Cigna prescription coverage resulted in panic, with my patient being told they would pay thousands per month for their medicine, which previously had been totally covered. Samuel advocated for the patient on several 3-way calls to both Cigna and the manufactuer over many days to resolve system issues causing a coverage gap for medicines. The patient was thrilled to finally get their medicine at no cost and we were able to pro-actively help other patients in the same situation based on the info gained from this experience.
